Smoke-Free Ontario Act Signage

The Smoke-Free Ontario Act prohibits smoking in all enclosed public places and enclosed workplaces in Ontario.

The Smoke-Free Ontario Act requires that appropriate signage be clearly posted as described below.

Enclosed Workplaces and Enclosed Public Places

Employers and proprietors must place No Smoking signs at each entrance, exit and in all washrooms, parking garages and other appropriate locations in a clearly visible manner and in sufficient numbers to ensure that employees and the public are aware that smoking is NOT permitted in the enclosed workplace or enclosed public place.

Bar and Restaurant Patios (*) with a roof (*) must also post these No Smoking signs. (* As defined by Ontario Regulation 48/06)

Day Nurseries and Licensed Private-Home Day Cares

Employers, proprietors and operators of these facilities must follow the same signage requirements as enclosed workplaces and public places.

Hotels, Motels, Inns

In addition to the above signage requirements, employers and proprietors must place No Smoking signs in every guest room that has NOT been designated as a smoking room and in its washroom.

Hospitals, Psychiatric Facilities and Residential Care Facilities

In addition to the signage requirements for enclosed workplaces and public places, smoking is prohibited from within a 9 metre radius of all entrances and exits of these facilities.

This must be indicated near entrances and exits to ensure that employees and the public are aware that smoking is NOT permitted within the 9 metre radius.

Tobacco Retailers
Age Restriction and Health Warning

Tobacco retailers must post an Age Restriction and Health Warning sign at any location where tobacco is sold or supplied in a place where the sign is clearly visible to the person who sells or supplies the tobacco and to the person to whom the tobacco is sold or supplied.

Government I.D.

Tobacco retailers must post a Government I.D. required sign at any location where tobacco is sold or supplied in a place where the sign is clearly visible to the person who sells or supplies the tobacco and to the person to whom the tobacco is sold or supplied.

Controlled Smoking Areas (CSAs) in Residential Care Facilities, Designated Veterans Facilities and Psychiatric Facilities

If a controlled smoking area in a residential care facility, designated veterans facility or psychiatric facility is set aside for the purpose of smoking, the proprietor of the facility and the employer of the workers in the facility must post You Have To Live Here To Smoke Here signs outside each entrance to the controlled smoking area.

In addition, the proprietor of the facility and the employer of the workers in the facility must post, outside each entrance to the controlled smoking area, a sign indicating the maximum permitted occupancy of the controlled smoking area and the hours in which smoking is not permitted (to facilitate cleaning).
